Our Mission

The Michigan Volunteer Defense Force (MIVDF), at the direction of the Governor (Commander-in-Chief) and Michigan National Guard Adjutant General (TAG), provides reliable support personnel to local and state agencies during declared emergencies.

The mission of the MIVDF is to provide 'Mission-Ready' military forces to assist state and local authorities in times of state emergencies; to conduct homeland security and community service activities; and to augment the Michigan National Guard as required.

Who We Are

The Volunteer Defense Force has been serving Michigan since 1917. While the times have
changed, the mission has stayed the same: to be "Vigilant, Ever Ready..."

Why We Serve

MIVDF soldiers join for a variety of reasons - some wish to continue their tradition of service, others desire to learn military customs. MIVDF soldiers have this in common: we desire to give back to our state.
